Roy (Michael Shannon) ran away from a religious cult in rural Texas with his biological son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) who possesses powers from another world. An alert Ambert is issued for the boy by FBI but Lucas (Joel Edgerton), Roy’s childhood friend, a state trooper, helps him to protect Alton. Calvin Meyer (Sam Shepard) leader of the cult who had kidnapped Alton from his father, is arrested by FBI. Roy, Alton and Lucas are driving throught the back country at night to go to a place defined by the young boy with his supernatural powers.
Roy (Michael Shannon) s’est enfui d’une secte religieuse dans le Texas rural avec son fils biologique Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) qui posséde des dons d’un autre monde. Une alerte enlèvement d’enfant (Ambert) est lancé par le FBI mais Lucas (Joel Edgerton), un ami d’enfance de Roy, un ancien soldat, l’aide pour protéger Alton. Le leader de la secte Calvin Meyer (Sam Shepard) qui avait enlevé Alton à son père, est arrêté par le FBI. Une course poursuite à travers plusieurs Etats a lieu vers un point défini par le jeune garçon aux pouvoirs surnaturels.
