In Blackburg, Kentucky, Farrell clan reigns over the hills of Appalachias. It is an isolationist group which lives without money and lives a life without comfort since hundred years. At the head of the family there is a matriarch, Lady Ray Farrell.

David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant), sheriff of the town of Ogden Marsh in Iowa and a part of the inhabitants, attended a baseball game. Russell Clank (Joe Anderson) his Deputy, is covered with a shotgun by a resident who appears drunk. David shoots and kills the man. Judy (Radha Mitchell), the town doctor and the wife of the sheriff, view other cases of people crazy, incoherent and aggressive behaviour.

The previous night, a farmer burned his house with his wife and son inside. During his investigation, the sheriff discovers the body of a pilot of the air force and the plane dropped into water has contaminated the town‘s drinking water supply. Ogden Marsh is isolated from the rest of the world, quarantined and some healthy people will try to escape from the military and to the isolation camps.

La nuit précédente, un fermier a brûlé sa maison avec sa femme et son fils à l’intérieur. Au cours de son enquête, le shériff découvre le corps d ‘un pilote de l’armée de l’air et l’avion tombé dans l’eau a contaminé la réserve d’eau potable de la ville. Ogden Marsh est isolée du reste du monde, en quarantaine et quelques habitants sains vont tenter d’échapper aux militaires et aux camps d’isolement.

Le docteur Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), aventurier et star à la télévision grâce à son émission there’s magic out there, est porté disparu depuis six mois. Le docteur est parti seul pour un voyage au fin fond de l’Amazonie, mais sa balise de détresse vient de se déclencher. Durant de nombreuses années, c’est en famille qu’il voyageait avec sa femme Tess (Leslie Hope) et son fils Lincoln (Joe Anderson).

Tess demande de l’aide, pour financer une mission de sauvetage, aux responsables de la chaîne de télévision et ils acceptent à condition que cela devienne une expédition style Télé réalité avec le producteur et les caméramans à bord du bateau. Lincoln, sa mère et des amis de son père embarquent pour remonter l’Amazone et vont suivre les traces laissées par Emmet dans des endroits plus ou moins effrayants. A leurs côtés, ils auront un garde du corps, le capitaine KurtBrynildson (Thomas kretschmann).

Amy et Stacy (Laura Ramsey) ainsi qu’Eric (Shawn Ashmore) et Jeff (Jonathan Tucker) leurs petits amis respectifs, sont en vacances au Mexique, plus précisément à Cancun. Ils vont faire la connaissance de Mathias (Joe Anderson) jeune touriste allemand et Dimitri, un ami grec. Le frère de Mathias est parti avec une archéologue explorer une pyramide maya et ne sont pas revenus.

Tout le groupe décide d’aller jusqu’à la pyramide et d’examiner les lieux à la recherche des deux disparus. Une mystérieuse plante grimpante recouvre les parois de l’édifice. Lorsqu’ ils veulent s’éloigner de celle-ci, les villageois des alentours les en empêchent et pour se protéger, les jeunes doivent l’escalader jusqu’au sommet.

En haut, il trouve un camp abandonné et un genre de puits qui descend à l’intérieur de la pyramide. La plante est carnivore et s’accroche à tout ce qui l’approche et grandit à l’intérieur de l’hôte.
